Ship working systems inside the customer's boundary
Forward deployed engineers (FDEs) sit with the customer, find the real problem and ship working software, often AI, into the customer's environment. In defense that environment comes with CUI, government clouds and an authorization to operate (ATO) to earn. This three-stage track builds the engineering, consulting and compliance skills to do the job.
Why a defense-specific FDE track
Commercial FDE programs teach discovery and AI delivery. Defense work adds CUI boundaries, government clouds, impact levels and the ATO process, and that is where many deployments stall. This track teaches both halves, from people who build CUI enclaves and prepare contractors for assessments.
The track at a glance
| Stage | Focus | You leave able to |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Foundational | FDE Fundamentals: Discovery, Data & Rapid Delivery | Turn a vague customer problem into a scoped, working prototype. |
| 2 · Specialization | Shipping AI in Regulated Environments | Deploy an AI application inside a CUI boundary with the controls an assessor expects. |
| 3 · Certification | Field Capstone & CompTIA Security+ Prep | Run a field engagement end to end, and sit the Security+ exam. |
Stage 1 — FDE Fundamentals: Discovery, Data & Rapid Delivery
Problem framing and discovery with mission users, scoping and writing for decision-makers, Python and API work, integrating messy data sources, Git, containers and rapid prototyping.
Stage 2 — Shipping AI in Regulated Environments
Building LLM, RAG and agent applications for real users; evaluation and guardrails; deploying into Microsoft 365 GCC High, Azure Government and AWS GovCloud; DoD Cloud Computing SRG impact levels; CUI handling, identity and logging; and secure CI/CD.
Stage 3 — Field Capstone & CompTIA Security+ Prep
A simulated customer engagement from discovery to prototype, security documentation for the ATO package (System Security Plan inputs and NIST SP 800-53 control narratives), demo and handoff to a customer panel, plus preparation for the CompTIA Security+ exam.
Where FDEs fit in DoD 8140
Forward deployed engineer is not a DoD Cyber Workforce Framework work role. On DoD programs, FDEs usually fill software engineering or IT roles. The qualification matrix for the software engineering element is still pending validation; for IT roles such as 451 System Administrator, CompTIA Security+ appears in the current matrix (version 2.1), which is why Stage 3 includes it.
Roles you’ll be ready for
Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI or Solutions Engineer, and deployment engineer on defense and government programs.
About the exam preparation. VIS builds and teaches its own preparation material for the CompTIA Security+ exam. VIS is not a CompTIA or ISC2 training partner and this is not official courseware. Exam vouchers are bought separately from the certification body. CompTIA Security+ is a trademark of CompTIA.
Frequently asked questions
What is a forward deployed engineer?
Part software engineer, part consultant: an FDE works on site or embedded with the customer team, runs discovery with users, builds and integrates the solution, deploys it into the customer's environment and hands it over.
Who is this track for?
Software, data and cloud engineers with working Python, and solutions engineers moving into delivery roles on defense and government programs.
Can you train our whole team?
Yes. We run private cohorts for defense contractors, integrators and AI companies serving government customers, built around your platform and your customers' environments.
Is the Security+ preparation official CompTIA training?
No. VIS builds and teaches its own exam-preparation material and is not a CompTIA training partner. Exam vouchers are bought separately from CompTIA.
How is it delivered?
Live-virtual, instructor-led cohorts. Cohorts run once minimum enrollment is met; next dates announced soon.
